TWEENS CULTURE
LANDMARKS, AND WASTE MATERIAL
The redevelopment of Frihamnen, an old industrial harbor in Gothenburg, is transforming the area into a vibrant space for the city's residents with a focus on children's play and cultural activities.
Spearheaded by Prototyping Gothenburg and supported by the MFA Child Culture Design at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg. The project aims to engage children in the design process, fostering inclusive and sustainable urban spaces. The initiative will be launched with a festival in early June celebrating Gothenburg's 400th anniversary.
The UN Convention Rights of the Children states:
“1. States Parties recognize the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.
2. States Parties shall respect and promote the right of the child to participate fully in cultural and artistic life and shall encourage the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic, recreational and leisure activity.”
IDEATION MAPPING
As part of the Lek i Staden research initiative, children from the Junior Club at the International English School Krokslätt, aged 8-12, will participate in structured workshops, providing feedback from a child-centered perspective and contributing to the design process. By taking on design roles and offering input on the final outcomes, these children will play a crucial part in shaping the development.
To support sustainability, BRA Bygg AB, a contractor building a church in Frihamnen, will supply leftover materials for the project. This collaborative effort aims to create a child-friendly, culturally rich urban space, enhance community engagement, and promote sustainable development practices. (Expect screw)
Co-design with children and investigate creative process
01
-
Mapping interests through pictures and discussions
-
Show the children where the material is collected from
-
Sketching 1:1 structures with cardboard and the material from BRA
-
Making our own tools: making our own brushes and workwear outfit
-
2D sketching on the ground, favorite shapes as inspiration
Framework for the landmark/structure
02
-
Sketch the height elements and overall shape ideas for the landmark structure.
-
Define the external texture and layout to refine the design concept.
-
Create a clay model to finalize the shape and details of the structure.
-
Build a prototype to visualize and understand the final appearance of the structure.
03
Purpose of the project
-
Through co-design method with children:
Investigate what type of play activity the children are interested in enhance agency for the children.
-
By using waste-materials throughout the whole process:
Practice sustainable and resourceful methods to minimize environmental impact and demonstrate possibilities to children.
-
By producing a three-dimensional structure:
Create a space where children feel ownership, make a visible impact, and demonstrate to Gothenburg citizens the possibilities of using recycled materials.

DESIGN & BUILDING

Building start with collecting the waste material from the constructor site. Using the wooden pieces to measure out the site space
(Size: 4x6 meter)
Start by building the skeletal structure and the contours of the outer skin, making sure that the scaffolding must be secure.

Each piece of fish scale shape is hand cut and contrasted one by one to ensure that it matches the logic of the surface layers. Once the overall skin pattern was bound, the coloring began. The colors were chosen from the new Little Mermaid movie posters.

Fjäll is the same word for fish-scales as for mountain in swedish. Naming it Fjället also gives it an ambiguous usage and letting it be open interpretation.
